Budgam: The hailstorm that lashed many areas of Central Kashmirs Budgam and North Kashmirs Baramulla districts on Wednesday evening has caused extensive damages to the paddy and apple crop.
The hailstorm has damaged crops in scores of villages of Beeru, Budgam and Sonawari, Sumbal and has caused panic among the farming community.
Initially the hailstorm occurred in many villages of Charar-e-Sharief tehsil, however the hamlets of Beeru, particularly at Khanpura, Amandar Chak, Shunglipora, Kokar Bagh, Khag, Pathipora and Sujan and other areas and resulted in widespread damage to rice, maize, apple and pear crop, the locals said.
The crop which was ripe has almost been destroyed. The villages are already poverty stricken and cant afford such loss. I appeal to the State Government to provide ex-gratia to the affected farmers and also provide free ration for them, said MLA Beeru, Dr Muhammad Shafi Wani.
Hailstorm damaged apple trees and crops in many villages of Sumbal particularly Nesbal, Naninara, Asham, Zaznu, Dingura, Ahan, Wakoora and Botvin.
The paddy seedlings too got damaged in many villages surrounding Charar-i-Sharief, the residents said.
The farmers have appealed to the district administration to assess damage due to hailstorm and have demanded immediate relief for the same. The government should constitute a committee to assess the loss and provide the compensation to the affected farmers accordingly, the residents added.
