With a view to promote White Water Sports the JKSMA has recently organized a River Rafting training camp on the waters of Sindh River at Sonamarg in which 170 students and many teachers of G V Educational Institute took part. The participants were selected in different age groups from 12 to 18 years both from boys and girls categories.
The students of lower age groups were taught basic skills of paddling and rafting techniques in a calm water body at Sonamarg. They were thrilled to use the river gear in the inflatable rafts. The children liked the sport and desired to run down the running river. They were thrilled and excited while receiving the training. At the end of the course a small competition was organized among the participants in the pond. The main objective was to encourage river rafting at grass root level and also to encourage a spirit of competition among the tiny hearts.
While, the senior students, above 13 years of age, were taught serious river rafting in Sindh Nallah at Sonamarg by the experts of JKSMA. The participants were taught paddling, rescue work, life saving, river features, rapid grading and competitive events. The main aim of training the youth was to inculcate a spirit of river rafting among them and to raise Rafting Teams for future local, national and international rafting championships. The training was imparted under the supervision of Muhammad Yusuf, retired Kashmir University Aquatic Coach and Rauf Tramboo, General Secretary JKSMA.
