Grannies Of Covid-19 Patient Among 17 New Cases, J&K Tally At 224

The 12 new cases of Covid-19 surfaced in twin districts of Kupwara and Bandipora and Shopian and Budgam districts of south and central Kashmir.

70-year-old and 80-year-old grandmothers of a Covid-19 patient, a 23-year-old youth, also tested positive to the deadly infection today in Muqam Shahwali area of Kupwara. The third positive case that surfaced in Trehgam area is a youth hailing from Bandipora. He has a travel history to Bhopal and New Delhi, news agency GNS reported.

Covid-19 cases also rose by five in the neighbouring Bandipora district. While three of them are women, two other are youth, all residents of Gund Jahangeer area of the district and contacts of previous coronavirus patients.

In Baramulla, a 24-year-old woman from Wagub, Sopore tested positive for coronavirus. In Budgam an elderly man with travel history to New Delhi, tested positive to Covid-19, reports said.

The case from Shopian is a 30-year-old man, a resident of Shirmal area and is said to be the contact of a previous patient who happens to be his grandfather, they added.

Jammu reported five new cases and includes a woman who tested positive after delivering a baby at a hospital on Friday.

From 52 reported cases by the end of last month, the J&K reached a cumulative tally of 106 cases on April 5. Till date, the officially confirmed tally stands at 224—44 in Jammu and 180 in Kashmir. Four people have died due to the deadly infection in the J&K while six others—three each in Jammu and Kashmir divisions have recovered and discharged.

More than 165 cases were added in the last eleven days alone. From the time the first Covid-19 case was announced in J&K on March 9, it took about three weeks for the cases to reach 50-mark. It took the next five days for the cases to double—to cross 100—and next as many days to cross 200-mark.

Meanwhile, the media bulletin released by government today said that out of 224 positive cases, 214 are active Positive, 6 have recovered and 4 others have died.

The bulletin said that till date 48202 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been put under surveillance, including 7729 persons in home quarantine, 422 in hospital quarantine, 214 in hospital isolation and 28912 under home surveillance.

“Besides, 10921 persons have completed their 28-day surveillance period. 2982 samples have tested as negative till April 11, 2020,” the bulletin said.

Giving a district-wise break up, the bulletin says that Srinagar has 58 positive cases out of which 56 are active, one has recovered and one died. Bandipora district has 41 positive cases with 38 active and one fatality, while Baramulla has 33 positive cases, 32 of them active besides one death.

“Budgam has 11 active cases, Pulwama 3, Shopian and Kupwara with 14 and 15 active positive cases respectively. Ganderbal and Kulgam have 2 and 3 active cases of coronavirus,” the bulletin said.

Similarly, Jammu has 19 positive cases of which 17 are active, two have recovered while, Udhampur has 18 positive cases of which 17 are active besides one fatality. Rajouri and Kishtwar have 3 and 1 positive cases respectively wherein all the three in Rajouri are active and the single positive case has recovered fully in Kishtwar district. Further, there are 3 active cases in Samba, the bulletin adds.

The bulletin also carried an advisory saying elders with underlying health conditions are at higher risk of developing severe forms of Covid-19.

“For those over 60 years and people with underlying health conditions, keeping your physical distance from others is advised. Don’t allow visitors or go outside during the COVID-19 outbreak. Alternatively, socialize by phone every day with friends or family,” the advisory adds.
