SRINAGAR: A low intensity quake jolted Kishtwar town on Tuesday afternoon. However, no loss of life was reported from the area.
Around 1:36 pm, the quake hit mountainous area of Kishtwar with magnitude 4.4 on Richter scale and depth 15km. The quake lasted nine seconds, Met officials said.
Director, Metrological Department, Sonam Lotus said the tectonic activity around Jammu and Kashmir has abruptly increased. Kishtwar witnessed several quakes during past few months. We cant predict at what time an unfortunate incident will take place but we have to be prepared for any eventuality.
We are very much fearful as we are witnessing jolts every week. Today I was in my classroom as quakes shook our window panes and doors which lasted for almost few seconds, Abid Ahmed, a student at Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Kishtwar said.
Pertinent to mention a series of tremors have jolted Bhaderwah, Doda and Kishtwar areas of the state in past few months. In May this year, Bhaderwah and its adjoining areas witnessed 37 tremors. In August, there were as many as five quakes in Bhaderwah, Doda, Kishtwar areas.
