Register cases against violators: Minster to Traffic police
SRINAGAR: Despite Supreme Court directions that only high ranking dignitaries should use beacon-cum-red lights, a number of low rank government officers in Jammu and Kashmir are continuously misusing the facility.
Low rank government officers are misusing such an advantage despite not being entitled to it. Similarly, former legislators, former ministers, their children and even the lower-rank police officers are seen using red light cars in violation of rules, sources said.
A senior government official who wished not to be named said, Only 31 categories of dignitaries who can use the red-flasher light which includes Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Speaker Legislative Assembly, Chairman Legislative Council, Chief
Justice of High Court, Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, Leader of Opposition, Mayors of two cities (within their jurisdiction), Chairman of LAHDC/Kargil/Leh (within their jurisdiction), Members of Parliament and State Legislature. Also officers like Chief Secretary, Advocate General, Chairman PSC, Financial Commissioners, DGP and equivalent rank officers, Principal Secretaries and Divisional Commissioners.
But number of officials use red flasher cars including DySPs Special Secretaries, Directors, Additional Secretaries, and heads of departments are violating the norms rampantly and even family members of VIPs use these vehicles in their absence, he said.
Meanwhile, a senior cabinet Minister said that J&K government has issued an order under which only the specified dignitaries and officers have been authorized to use beacon lights on the top of their vehicles.
Terming it as an unfortunate he said it is a problem which needs to be looked into. Traffic department should take action against those who misuses it and should register cases against the violators, he said.
When Contacted Inspector General Traffic police Munner Ahmad Khan said, We have launched a drive against the misuse of Red Flasher Lights on Government vehicles.
Strict action will be initiated against the defaulters misusing the red beacon lights under Motor Vehicle Act as law is supreme and should be honoured, he said. KNS
