SRINAGAR: In yet another instance of corporal punishment being used to discipline students, a student of class VIII had to be admitted to a hospital after he was punished by school principal for cracking a joke in the playground.
Mehrab Mushtaq Wani, a 14-year-old student of a private school in Wazbagh, Hyderpora quarter of Srinagar, was punished by his principal. Unable to walk, he was admitted to SMHS Hospital on Friday with a swollen right arm and neck, his family alleged.
The doctors have advised Mehrab to use collar for his neck as he is feeling too much pain. His left arm is fractured as well, Mushtaq Ahmed, father of the student said.
We were playing in the playground cracking jokes which the principal did not like and he thrashed me ruthlessly with stick and kicked me like football. He repeatedly hit my neck and back and spared me only when I felt unconscious, Mehrab said.
Mushtaq Ahmed said that it is irony even after violating norms, the principal of the school displays dogmatic approach and threatens of discharging my son from the school in case I reported this incident to anyone.
Despite repeated attempts the accused Principal could not be contacted. (CNS)
