TANGHDAR: Indian army Saturday said five well armed militants were killed in an encounter with soldiers along Line of Control (LoC), in Tanghdar sector of north Kashmir.
An Army spokesperson said that, based on specific intelligence about likelihood of infiltration, troops deployed in Tangdhar Sector of Kupwara district launched a counter infiltration operation for two nights, resulting into killing of five militants who were attempting to sneak into this side of Line of Control.
The alert troops, who were guarding the Line of Control, got intelligence inputs about likelihood of infiltration attempt on the night of Aug 29. At approximately 11:30 PM, the intruders were spotted. Accordingly, troops established counter infiltration posture to cover the route of infiltration, Defence spokesperson said.
He said that the militant group was trapped at a location, approximately 1.5 kms on our side of the Line of Control. Grid remained in place for next 24 hours despite difficult terrain and bad weather. On the night of Aug 30, the noose around the terrorist group was tightened forcing them to attempt breaking out of the cordon, he said.
At 9.30 PM, two militants were spotted at approximately 50m from the troops. On being challenged, the militants opened heavy fire against the deployed soldiers. The fire fight ensued for few hours resulting into the killing of four of them. Later, in the night move of other terrorist was also detected in the same area. He too was effectively engaged. On search of the area, body of five slain terrorists were recovered with six AK-47 and other warlike stores. The identity and affiliation of the group is yet to be ascertained.
Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, Chinar Corps Commander commended the soldiers and Commanders for the professionalism and grit resulting into surgical counter infiltration operation eliminating the infiltration bid. He also conveyed special appreciation to the intelligence agencies for the effective Intelligence grid.
