SRINAGAR: The army on Friday allegedly enacted an encounter for New Delhi-based news channels after they failed to capture the overnight clash between militants and government forces in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district that left five Hizbul Mujahideen militants dead.
According to Srinagar based news agency CNS overnight encounter between government forces and militants in Prang area occurred in the absence of media and no news channel was able to capture the live shots.
Soon after the General Commanding Officer, Victor Force of the army concluded his press briefing some reporters working for top news channels requested Army officials to enact a gunfight so that they could pass it off as the live encounter, it said.
Quoting witnesses CNS reported that Army was kind enough to oblige to the repeated requests of the reporters working for some New Delhi-based news channels.
“Reporters and cameramen of four Indian news channels were taken to a nearby willow field adjacent to Wusan Camp of 24 Rashtriya Rifles. The labourers who were extracting sand from Sindh (Indus) were ordered to leave the place to pave way for Army to fire some shots, a local reporter said.
Reports said that Army kept on firing whilst the cameramen captured shots of the ‘encounter’ from different angles, which were later aired on these news channels throughout the day.
Some of the reporters even presented themselves before camera giving an impression that they were in the middle of an encounter.
