Govt of playing with lives of downtown people
Srinagar: Expressing resentment over the unbearable stench emanating from Achan garbage dump, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to register a protest against continued indifference of the authorities. The protest is scheduled to take place at Press Enclave here on August 29 and will be led by Mohammad Khursheed Aalam.
It made life miserable for hundreds of thousands of residents of downtown Srinagar and its adjoining areas. The situation has worsened since the soaring of temperatures in the last few weeks with complaints of horrid stench pouring in from as far as Lal Bazaar, Nigeen, Nowshera, Zadibal, Narwara, Hawal Nowhatta and other areas of downtown, Aalam said.
It is like the smell of rotten eggs and raw sewerage, and the stenches is so powerful that it becomes difficult for us to go outside or even open windows of our houses, he added. Blaming National Conference and Srinagar Municipal Corporation for making lives of lakhs of citizens miserable, he said: Currently, SMC has only one dumping site at Achan which is a 540 kanal strip of land at Saidpora near Eidgah on the fringes of old city.
Nearly 350 metric tons of daily solid waste collected by the SMC is dumped in Achan groundsin violation of Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, which clearly states that municipal authorities shall establish and maintain storage facilities in such a manner that they do not create unhygienic and insanitary conditions around it, Aalam added.
There is no system in place to control the bad odour emanating from the dumped garbage. Diseases are spreading and health of general public is at risk.
He said that PDP is going to organize a protest demonstration at Press Enclave on August 29 against the failure of government for taking necessary actions in the interest of people at large.KNS
