Detained Geelani Misses 25th Friday Prayer

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (G) has strongly condemned the continuous detention of its chairman Syed Ali Geelani and said preventing him from attending his religious, social and political obligation is unconstitutional and morally wrong.

In a statement Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar said, “Geelani sahib was not allowed to offer Friday prayers and it is 25th Friday in a row that he was not permitted to offer prayers.”

While condemning the detention, he alleged that even judiciary failed to deliver justice and undue delay in its judicial processes is extremely painful and organization for human rights too failed to play any effective role in this regard. “Omar Abdullah through its dictatorial rule never permitted Geelani to interact freely with the people and during his five year tenure and from day first, he adopted hostile attitude towards Geelani. Omar has surpassed all records of his father and grandfather,” he alleged.

While referring to history, Akbar said, “Omar is following footsteps of late Bakshi Ghulam Muhammad and playing similar role. Bakshi while justifying detention of then leadership of Plebiscite Front had called them a threat for peace in the valley.” While lashing at Omar he said that he too is playing folly the same way the rulers in past did. While commenting the role played by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and his close aide Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, recalled that while scolding the then Bakshi regime they resorted to abusive language against their political opponents and nicknamed them as traitors and Gugs. “What is wrong if they for their wrongdoings and misdeeds be termed as traitor or Gugs the same way they did with their opponents,” he asked. While in his address to Omar he asked that history stands testimony and it repeats itself and added that if he persisted for his ‘unjustified’ stand and approach, then definitely on the annals of history his name will figure likewise that of Mir Jaffar and Mir Sadiq and future generations would remember him as a member of erstwhile Gugh party.

“Geelani has been confined to his home since 2010. However, the restrictions in 2013 were more tough and unprecedented. Since his return from Delhi onMarch 7, Geelani Sahib could not avail any opportunity to offer even Eid and Friday prayers,” he said.

Akbar said that Hurriyat filed a petition against this unlawful detention and though court after its admission passed an judgment and reserved it for announcement, but is still awaited. He expressed his anguish and asked that even three months have passed  and legal institutions ‘failed to answer that under what law Geelani is being confined to four walls and denied basic and fundamental rights.’
