The SKIMS Medical College and Hospital Bemina commonly called JVC here has been changed into a full fledged Covid Hospital and will start recieving Covid suspects and positive patients from 31st of March.
It might sound easy to convert such a teritiary care Institute of the Valley into Covid facility center but on ground it is very difficult and it takes toll on the administration and the staff. But at this stage administration of SKIMS MCH Bemina did what had to be done.We presently have more than five thousand people quarantined in the valley. This number is to go up in the coming days and we have to be ready for the bad while hoping for the good.
Initial stage
In the initial stage new admissions were cancelled and patients coming where guided to different hospitals. The Gynaecology and Obstetrics department guided it’s patients to LDH (GMC) or Trust Hospital SKIMS Soura. Besides this Operation Theatres were closed. The staff members were informed of the change so that they can be psychologically prepared to serve after 31 March.
Many high level meetings with district administration were held.
Second stage
Patients were discharged and the hospital emptied. Fumigation and other cleaning processes started. Now began the framework of the new Covid Hospital. In this stage while cleaning and clearing of stuff was taking place in one hand ,the administration was deciding the necessary measures related to isolation ward and quarantine. Besides this administration also had to decide the Duty Roster of staff. In the second stage the students hostel is also to be made vacant and available for the staff. The hospital staff can not visit home after working in close contact with the patients now.
Third stage
The third stage that is yet to star patient will be brought and quarantined and treated in adverse cases.
Who works on ground level
Administration: It take a great toll on the administration to take strategic decisions related to the hospital administration in these conditions. If the administrators make a single mistake it can prove fatal to the whole community. The adminstration works in tandem with the staff and medicos as these are the backbones of the hospital.
Doctors and Nurses:
The doctors and nurses have so far been relaxing and preparing themselves to be ready for the impending battle. These along with the paramedics are the foot soldiers of this battle. The battle in this hospital will start from 31 March till that doctors and nurses are sending suggestions to administration which the administration never takes far granted.
Unsung heroes:
The sweepers, security personnel and casual labourers are the true heroes of the second stage. They cleaned the whole hospital and made it look new again. These people worked with an equal heart and provided the necessary work done which otherwise is not possible.
The security is an equal contributor here. They helped with many manual stuff as I witnessed.
Effects of converting a Hospital into Covid Hospital:
◆People in Kashmir have high hopes with SKIMS and changing this hospital into a Covid Hospital will provide a sense of security to the people of the valley. Being a teritiary card institute the doctors, nurses and paramedics are highly competent and this fact is recognised throughout the Valley so patients admitted here will feel psychologically content that they are getting good treatment.
◆The economic impact would be very high and the personal protective equipment would cost a huge chunk of money so easy flow of funds are the need of the hour.
◆Psychologically the staff would be little dishearted but deep down they would be happy to serve the nation.
◆Voluntary services could be needed in tough times like this.
◆ As the normal patient care is affected greatly there would be a more workload on other hospital as the patients would be visiting them these days.
◆The staff of this institute will always be remembered for this service to its people.
