Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Thursday ordered continued restriction of mobile data speed till April 3 taking into consideration “available alternatives”.
The home department said in an order uploaded on its website that the decision was taken “on consideration of the overall security and the reports of the law enforcement agencies inter-alia bringing out the necessity of speed related restrictions on mobile data services and upon assessment of the available alternatives”.
Principal Secretary to the Government, Home Department ordered that the internet speed shall be restricted to 2G only.
“The postpaid sim card holders shall be provided with access to the Internet. However, such access shall not be made available on pre-paid sim cards unless verified as per the norms applicable for Post-paid connections,” reads an order issued here.
It said fixed line Internet connectivity with Mac-binding, shall be available.
“The aforesaid directions shall he effective immediately and remain in force upto 3rd April, 2020, unless modified earlier.” The IGPs Kashmir and Jammu respectively have been asked to ensure compliance by the service providers.
Several political parties including the National Conference, the CPI(M), the BJP and the Congress has batted strongly for restoration of 4G mobile internet services in Jammu and Kashmir to help people to deal with an unprecedented situation that has arisen in the wake of the coronavirus.
