Crops, roads damaged; water, electricity supply hit
SRINAGAR: A cloudburst and heavy overnight rains Wednesday triggered flash floods and wrecked havoc in Zaurstan village of Tral in South Kashmir.
Though there were no reports of any casualty floods have caused extensive damage to scores of residential houses, including a mosque, local High School, Ration Depot besides destroying crops worth lakhs of rupees.
The villagers said that cloudburst struck at around 1 A.M and the blast with water flowing down created panic among the sleeping villagers. The water forced its way into the houses .The walls of my house have developed several cracks due to the flood water, Rasheed Ahmad, a local resident said.
Dozens of houses, including Govt High School building suffered damage and about 1 kilometer stretch of road, that connects Zurstan and Prungam villages was also swept away, Station House Officer (SHO) Tral, Muhammad Saleem Mir said.
I along with police team visited the affected area and we are taking stock of the situation, SHO said on phone.
Residents said that their crops and properties were badly hit. We are without electricity and water supply also, said Javid Ahmad, a resident of Zurstan.
Authorities said, Preliminary assessment had revealed that scores of kanals of land with standing crops have got damaged and around three structures have been damaged completely. It was found that many families have got affected in the natural calamity. A team of agricultural department and revenue officials were assessing the full damage. It would take a few days before the actual damage could be assessed, he said.
