WASHINGTON:A 1 million-dollar NASA research mission is nearing completion, as six astronauts prepare to come back down to ground level from the slope of a Hawaiian volcano after spending four months there.
The crew members spent months in a geodesic-dome “habitat” on the Mauna Loa volcano, venturing forth onto the barren lava field only in space suits, the New York Post reported.
The primary purpose of the mission- funded by NASA’s Human Research Program, the University of Hawaii and Cornell University- is to figure out how to live and cook in a Mars-like environment.
HI-SEAS Commander Angelo Vermeulen told Astrobiology Magazine that some of the successful meals were Russian borscht, Moroccan tagine, enchilasagna and seafood chowder.
He said that in general, the dehydrated and freeze-dried vegetables were a real success as they were used by them on a daily basis in almost every meal.
