JAMMU: Curfew remained in place across Jammu region Monday while fresh clashes were reported from curfew bound Kishtwar resulting in the injuries to half a dozen persons. The injured included two policemen who were targeted by a mob defying curfew, which entered its fourth day today.
Fresh clashes broke out in Hidyal area as locals defied the curfew to protest against the arrest of a youth for his alleged involvement in Friday’s communal violence in the area.
ASP Kulbir Singh and a selection grade constable sustained injuries in today’s clashes, which were still on when reports last came in Monday evening.
The Divisional Commissioner, Jammu said at least 10 people have been arrested in Kishtwar while dozens others have been arrested in other areas of Jammu for their involvement in disrupting peace.
The curfew has been in place in Kishtwar since Friday, when communal violence erupted in the town resulting in the killing of three persons with several others injured.
Meanwhile, four other policemen were injured last night in Kishtwar when unknown miscreants attacked their vehicle and set it on fire, police said.
The attack in the Shalimar area took place late last night as the policemen were travelling from Doda to Kishtwar.
The miscreants set the vehicle on fire and took away 10 wireless sets from the cops.
The injured cops, who have been hospitalized, were identified as head constable Ramesh Kumar, selection grade constable Farooq Ahmed, constable Ashwani Kumar and SPO Anil Kumar.
Eyewitness said that loudspeaker-mounted police vehicles Monday morning made the announcements in the curfew-bound areas, advising people to remain indoors. The army also carried out flag marches Monday morning in curfew-bound areas.
They said that some miscreants torched a vehicle in Domana area of Jammu city Sunday, where slogan-shouting protesters also burnt tyres at some places.
Reports reaching here from Poonch said that a peace march was carried out by members of both the communities in Poonch town Sunday to assert centuries-old communal harmony of Jammu and Kashmir.
The annual Amarnath yatra remained suspended on Monday as no pilgrim was allowed to proceed to the Valley.
Meanwhile The Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for the third consecutive day as a precautionary measure. Hundreds of passengers besides Amarnath pilgrims remained stranded in different parts of Kashmir.
A senior traffic police officer said that the highway remained closed on Monday as a precautionary measure. Official sources said that a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, and trucks loaded with fruit are stranded at Qazigund and other places on this side of the tunnel.
According to Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Shantmanu the situation is tense but under control. There were no reports of any untoward incident on Monday. Situation is being reviewed regularly and any decision on relaxation of curfew would be based on improvement in situation, he said.
