Police Fires To Scare Protesting Drivers

Srinagar: Police resorted to aerial firing in Batmaloo area of Srinagar to scare the Sumo drivers who were protesting against the alleged misconduct and misbehavior of Traffic police personnel.

A sumo driver said that it has become a routine now for traffic cops to hit their vehicles with sticks and damage their outer body. How long we could bear it. You stop at a point for sake of passengers and these traffic cops without any patience hit our vehicles and abuse us, he said.

Reports said that soon after a traffic cop hit a sumo vehicle, the driver of the vehicle argued with the cop and suddenly all the sumo drivers present their rebuked Traffic policemen present on duty.

This took an ugly turn when one of the traffic cop slapped a driver and in return few drivers kicked the traffic police man and beat them. Soon the Kashmir policemen came out from their Chowki and thrashed the drivers, one of the eyewitnesses said.

Sumo drivers resented the action of Kashmir police and pelted stones on them. The stone pelting incident created panic in the area and shopkeepers downed their shutters. In order to disperse the agitated protestors, one of the policeman fired some shots in air. Police arrested two drivers and lodged them in Police Station Batamaloo.

A police official said that there was a scuffle between sumo driver and a cop. The drivers resorted to stone pelting and tried to disrupt the peace in the area. We swung into action and dispersed them, he said.
