SRINAGAR: Army Tuesday said it foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LOC) in the Machhal sector of the frontline division of Kupwara in North Kashmir today and killed at least four suspected militants in the operation.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence based in Srinagar said troops were on the alert after receiving specific information from intelligence agencies about the likelihood of militants attempting infiltration in the area.
They detected movement of about five to six terrorists in a nullah on this side of the Line of Control at about 0600 hours in the morning.
“On being challenged by the troops, the terrorists opened fire. They were effectively engaged, resulting in the killing of two of them. The operations were simultaneously launched to eliminate the remaining infiltrators, leading to subsquent killing of two more. Till the last information received, a total of four infiltrators were killed in the operations,” the spokesperson said.
He said the troops engaged the militants by using multi-grenade launchers, claymore mines and small arms.
“Search operations by the troops in the area are still on and are likely to continue thoroughout the night,” the spokesperson added.
