Kupwara: In a bid to curb the smuggling of medicinal herbs in Frontier district Kupwara, Forest Protection Force in its drive arrested two smugglers and recovered nearly 50 kilograms of a rare medicinal plant, Pitrees (Aconitum roots).
The consignment is estimated to fetch more than Rs 5 millions in the international market. Giving details Range Officer Noor-ul-Amin told CNS that after getting inputs they laid a naka near Rajwar Handwara and arrested two persons and recovered nearly 50 kilograms of rare medicinal herbs. We have also seized the vehicle (HP-32A0213) in which these medicinal plants were being smuggled, he said.
He said that both the accused were handed over to police. Police identified the two accused as Mohammad Shafi Mir son of Ghulam Hassan Mir and Mohammd Sadiq Mir son of Ghulam Mohammad residents of Daradpora Kupwara.
The accused have been booked under section 379, 6 Forest Act, vide FIR number 163/2013 and they are being questioned, he said.
Pertinently, precious medicinal herbs worth lakhs of rupees are being collected and smuggled from forests in this frontier district. The smuggling of medicinal herbs like Pitrees (aconitum roots), Trepati, and seeds of Coniferous Deodar and Kail (Pine) are thriving in different parts of the frontier district of Kupwara and smugglers are earning with open hands.
