SRINAGAR: Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS) has welcomed the statement of Chief Mahant Dakhshani Akhara, Srinagar Shri Dipendre Giri regarding his opposition to commencement of Shri Amarnathji annual yatra before its due date on July 22, the day, when actually yatra should begin, as it used to be in past, the day corresponding to what Hindu sages call Ashand Purnima.
In a statement KCSDS observed that Mahants statement is in line with the stand taken by several other Hindu leaders that the yatra be commenced just one month prior to the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
The statement of Mahant that, in spite of informing the same, the authorities are in no mood to heed to it, vindicates the statement of KCSDS that yatra, which is welcome as long as it sticks to Hindu religious norms, as stated by the Shri Mahant is being needlessly politicized, ever since former GovernorGen Sinha conceived the idea of extending the date of yatra and increasing the number of yatris.
The KCSDS observed with great satisfaction that Shri Mahant understands the backlash of huge human activities in eco fragile zone that apart from vandalising the environment has adverse impact on the Shivlingham that has reportedly melted even before commencement of actual yatra.
The KCSDS also reiterated its demand for constitution of a committee comprising environmental experts from Kashmir University, Jammu University, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Wildlife Fund to recommend measures for the environmental protection of the areas around the cave shrine.
The KCSDS also demands that Kashmiri Pandits be given leadership role in the management affairs of Shri Amarnath Yatra for it believes that they are the true custodians of Hindu religious traditions and culture in Kashmir.
