Partial shutdown in Bandipore, Ganderbal, Pulwama
SRINAGAR: Normal life limped back to normalcy Monday after three days of shutdown and curfew against desecration of the holy Quran and over the deaths of protesters in Ramban district. However, some parts of the Valley observed spontaneous shutdown against arrest of youth and mischief inside a mosque by some unidentified persons in Ganderbal.
Markets and other commercial establishments, offices and educational institutions re-opened and public transport began plying normally Monday morning following end of three day long strike period and lifting of restrictions imposed by the government on the movement of people. Curfew and restrictions were imposed to prevent any protests against the desecration and subsequent killings by the BSF men in Gool area of Ramban.
Scenes of traffic jams were witnessed in the city as roads were again flooded with vehicles.
As uncertainty looms large, the streets of Srinagar witnessed heavy rush, as edgy residents rushed to stockpile essentials.
In old city, police and CRPF personnel remained on alert to thwart any protest demonstration.
Huge rush of consumers was witnessed outside ration depots of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department in various areas of the Valley with people waiting in long queues to purchase ration.
Even LPG cylinders were in demand, with people eagerly waiting for the truckloads of gas cylinders at different points earmarked by gas companies. People were also seen thronging the ATMs to withdraw money. Long queues of customers were witnessed at ATMs of JK Bank in old Srinagar.
An official of JK Bank said that lakhs of rupees were disbursed from the different ATM booths of the bank with more than 50000 hits by the customers.
Meanwhile, reports said that Sumbal area in North Kashmirs Bandipore district and Tral in South Kashimrs Pulwama district observed shutdown while Ganderbal district remained shut against the incident of mischief inside a mosque by some unidentified persons. Eyewitness said that early in the morning youth assembled near Behama Chowk in Ganderbal and pelted stones on Govt forces.
Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Gool and its adjoining areas for the fifth consecutive day. Sources said that higher officials of government visited Ramban district today to assess the situation.
Deputy Commissioner Ramban Muhammad Hussain Malik said that people are demanding immediate arrest of one of the persons who is involved in the firing incident. He said the guilty will be arrested tonight and will be brought before the law. There was shutdown in Gool, Sangaldan, Dharam and other areas but life is limping back to normal in Ramban and Banihal townships. Situation is under control and no report of any untoward incident was received from Ramban district, he said.
DIG Ashkoor Wani said that situation remained peaceful throughout the day in Ramban district.
Pertinently after the BSF firing in Gool, Ramban on Thursday, in which four persons were killed Hurriyat and allied parties had called for shutdown for three days. The authorities on their part clamped curfew in entire Kashmir and Chenab valleys on Friday and Saturday.
While the authorities lifted curfew yesterday, normal activities remained suspended due to strike called by Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani. With Inputs From KNS
