BANDIPORE: Protests rocked Bandipore against the district administration and Wild Life Department after the news spread about the death of a youth who was mauled along with his other colleagues by bears a few days before at ChittayBanday Argam.
A stray bear mauled another elderly person at the same place when he was returning home after morning prayers.
Pertinently, a few days ago four labours were left half dead by a herd of ferocious bears who were later on shifted to Soura Medical Institute Srinagar. One of them namely Bashir Ahmed Qureshi succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning.
As soon as the dead body of Bashir Ahmed reached to his native village, hundreds of people came on roads and raised anti-government and anti-Wild Life Department slogans. The inhabitants had already informed about the presence of wild animals in the area but no attention was paid in this regard. No measures are being taken to tame these ferocious wild animals, one of the protestors Ashiq Hussain said.
The protestors kept the dead body on road for hours as a result the traffic came to a standstill for hours. It was only after the arrival of Additional Deputy Commissioner and Tehsildar Bandipore that protestors dispersed peacefully upon assurance. Both the officers assured the protestors that strict measures would be taken to curb the movement of the wild animals in the area.
We have directed authorities to shoot these animals wherever they are sighted. Human life is precious and all measures would be taken to eliminate these beasts, ADC, Bandipore was quoted as saying by the CNS.
