SRINAGAR: Army Chief General Bikram Singh today called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here and briefed him about overall security scenario in the state.
General Singh, who was on a two-day visit to Jammu & Kashmir, called on Omar at his residence here Monday morning and discussed security issues of the state, official sources said.
All the issues including AFSPA were discussed during the meeting. Recent incidents of Bemina, Hyderpora and Bandipore were also discussed threadbare, Omar Abdullah later said.
The Chief Minister said that Army Chief assured him that they would take every step so that such incidents dont happen in future. On Bandipore killings he (Army Chief) assured me that procedures would be followed and also assured that in future such incidents wont happen, Omar told local news agency KNS.
Asked whether any consensus was reached on revocation of AFSPA from certain areas during the meeting, Omar said, All what I can say is that talks are on. I cant say more on it.
Meanwhile according to sources the Army Chief briefed the Chief Minister on the functioning of security grid in the State and the status of coordination between various agencies connected with the security and law and order maintenance.
Matters pertaining to Hyderpora and Markundal incidents also came up in the meeting and Army Chief assured the Chief Minister that necessary measures would be taken to ensure that such incidents do not take place in future, they said.
Hizbul Mujahideen militants had ambushed an Army convoy killing eight Army jawans and injuring 19 others near Hyderpora area on the outskirts of the city on June 25.
Two youths, both residents of Markundal village, were killed, allegedly in Army firing in the wee hours of June 30 in Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, leading to protests by the local residents.
GOC-in-C Northern Command, Lt. Gen. Sanjiv Chachra and GOC 15 Corps Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh were also present in the meeting.
Meanwhile, General Singh also visited the forward areas along the line of control and the hinterland formations, an army spokesman said.
While interacting with the officers and troops, the Army chief gave out his key thrust areas and stressed upon the secular and apolitical ethos of the Indian Army, he said.
