Srinagar: Amid increasing tension along the border with China in Ladakh and recent spurt in militancy related incidents in the Kashmir Valley, Army Chief, General Bikram Singh, on Monday, reviewed security measures in the state.
The Army Chief, who is on a two-day visit to the state, chaired a meeting at the 15 Corps headquarters, where he was briefed by the northern Army commander Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra and GOC of the Sringar-based 15 Corps Lt General Gurmit Singh about the overall situation.
The Army chief also held discussions with J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah and governor NN Vohra.
Singh received a detailed briefing about anti-infiltration measures and applauded the role of soldiers in foiling the recent infiltration bid in Keran sector of Kupwara district, in which five militants were gunned down.
The recent developments along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh region were also discussed.
Later, General Bikram Singh interacted with the GoCs of various counter-insurgency forces and Divisional Commanders of the Army. He also addressed the officers of the Chinar Corps which was relayed to officers present at 16 Corps (Jammu) and 14 Corps (Leh) through video conferencing.
The Army Chief later called upon the state governor N N Vohra at Raj Bhawan here at 6 p.m.
During the meeting, the Governor and Chief of the Army Staff discussed various matters relating to internal and external security management.
Before his return to New Delhi on Tuesday, the Chief of Army Staff is scheduled to visit forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir and interact with troops deployed on the Line of Control.
According to army sources, there have been 45 ceasefire violations until end of June along the LOC, compared to 27 last year. There were 69 infiltration attempts, including 30 successful ones, in 2013. Against this, there were only 49 infiltration attempts until end of June, 2012, and only 13 were successful.
Twenty security personnel have been killed till June 30, compared to just two during the same period last year.
The Army is also taking several measures to strengthen its position at LAC in view of the recent incursion by the Chinese troops in Depsang valley and the situation in the Chumar sector of Ladakh region.
