Srinagar: Noted human rights activist, Gautam Navlakha, has come down heavily on the J&K government for imposing restrictions on July 13 Martyrs Day. Navlakha said on Monday that the state government was treating Kashmiris as cattle who are being tamed by means of restrictions and curfew.
This is absolutely ridiculous that you force people at gunpoint to stay inside their homes. How long are you going to suppress the sentiments of the people? Every year restrictions are imposed on Martyrs Day and only a handful of politicians are allowed to move around the city. This depicts hypocrisy on part of the present government, said Navlakha, talking to a local news agency.
Kashmir, he said, would burst anytime.
He said the people of Kashmir enjoyed no rights.
The peace that is prevailing in Kashmir is temporary. People get more alienated once the government imposes undesirable restrictions. There is no space available for the masses. Separatist leaders are regularly put under house-arrest. In all these circumstances you cant claim that peace has returned in the Valley, he said.
Navlakha said election was a futile exercise until the Kashmir issue was addressed.
Development, elections, construction of roads and hospitals would fetch nothing till the real issue remains unaddressed, he said, adding that curfew, restrictions and repressions would continue till Kashmir issue was not resolved.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is maintaining peace at gunpoint and those who claim that it is permanent are living in a fools paradise, said Navlakha.
