SRINAGAR – A civilian was killed and four others were injured on Monday, as the estranged armies of India and Pakistan traded heavy gunfire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Tangdhar sector.
The deceased was identified as Mohammed Saleem Awan, 60, officials said.
Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing this morning. The Indian Army retaliated in adequate measure, the officials said.
Four civilians sustained injuries in the firing by Pakistani troops, they said.
On Sunday, a soldier, identified as SandeepYadav, was injured when Pakistan violated ceasefire and resorted to shelling, targeting forward posts at Bakhtoor in Gurez. Pakistani troops also violated ceasefire in Tanghdar sector in Kupwara on Sunday.
Official sources said that Pak troops are violating ceasefire, reached between India and Pakistan in 2003, to facilitate militants to infiltrate into Kashmir valley.
“A large number of militants are waiting at launch pads in Pakistan controlled-Kashmir (PcK) to sneak into this side,” they said.
However, they said despite facing severe cold and other odds, troops remained on high alert along the Line of Control (LoC) to foil any militant attempt to infiltrate into this side.
