G.Chatterjee: A number of wishes poured on Face Book or over phone to wish the OFB stalwart G.Chatterjee , retd. Deputy DG / ORD 1987-88 . Leading first line print media witnessed his intellect, called him “scholar, statesman and one of India’s most respected senior official of OFB and wise personality both in personal and professional life. Praised social and administrative acumen. Relatives friends, Ex- higher officials of OFB and other corporate heads ,well wishers also wished G,Chatterjee on his 90th birthday and prayed for his long life.
His grit and firm passion for education drove him towards optimum level of knowledge ,he did his Matric in 1945 , intermediate in 1947 with pure science both lower and higher schools he passed with distinction marks , then he got first class and graduated in Mechanical Engineering 1952 from Jadavpur Engineering College – when Dr. Triguna Sen was the principal now it is named Jadavpur University .
He joined (1st job) Hirakund Dam Project ( Govt of India /first major multipurpose river valley project started after India’s independence)
2nd Job: Central Water Power Commission, Govt of India, Irrigation Dept., New Delhi, during this time Govt of India sent him to USA for two years in Fort Belvoir in Virginia. He took-up some higher studies on metallurgy & mechanical engineering science & technology there in the Army School of Engineers Ft. Belvoir, USA – For other management and Industrial Engineering Degree Course. He also attended at Stanford University –USA for advance management course and awarded first class, secured 94% marks. Though he got several opportunities from USA Govt. And top corporate jobs with luxurious life style, and high pay package which he ignored and preferred to serve his own mother land India and he came back.
After coming back from USA he passed the most prestigious and top most UPSC – Indian Engineering Service Exam ,Govt of India . After he passed UPSC exams with flying colors he entered the Ordinance Factories. 1st Job: Cossipore Gun Shell Factory as a Deputy Manager , later he was promoted and transferred to Kanpur in Small Arms Factory (SAF) as a Deputy General Manager. There he kept on getting many promotions and reached the highest position of General Manager of that Factory. SAF -Kanpur was one of the best managed and he was awarded several times for best production as well as high quality management services.
During his tenure of 13 years in Kanpur when there was a major boiler accident ( with quite a no of deaths) in the Field Gun Factory ( FGF)- Kanpur, the previous GM left as he was getting death threats, no one of other OFB GMs was willing to take control of that factory, OFB Chairman and Member of Irrigation & Power Ministry ,Govt Of India – Dr. K.L Rao requested Mr. G . Chatterjee to take that position saying “ Chatterjee you are the best capable person to take the rein at this difficult time’’
He stayed in Field Gun Factory (FGF) – Kanpur successfully operated all serious issues firmly with courage and his honest wills many years till the end and before moving to Kolkata to work at the Ordnance Factory Board promoted as Deputy Director General head quarter at Auckland Place, Kolkata during 1987-88 . He was a regular professor and faculty lecturer of various science & technology and management classes for young Engineers across OFB – Factories Colleges entire of his working period.
Many OFB – present GMs, DGMs remember his powerful knowledge in various subject matters of OFB field qualitative teaching ability and passion.
During Mr. G. Chatterjee’s ’s time he boasted entire work force of OFB – factories at Kanpur-UP , he never ever dismissed anyone worker or staff !!! In fact he always believed in betterment of that person from inside with spiritual development, successfully taught every individual through personal intervention with moral education and practical examples.
He believes in the great philosophy of Thakur Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev’s holy book ‘KATHAMRITA’ and is a strong believer of Swamy Vivekananda’s philosophy in KARMAYOGA .
Once one worker of factory was suspended by the concerned Departmental Officer for serious violation of code of conduct .When Mr. G. Chatterjee , being the GM of Field Gun Factory –Kanpur found that the punished – worker’s family was suffering, he personally took initiative arranged money from GM’s Fund to help that family for maintaining livelihood and paying their kids’ school fees for entire suspension period of that worker . Several social works he did for betterment of workers and society and all Worker Unions leaders , and political leaders respected his administrative skills, knowledge and honesty till the date he left Kanpur- UP before joining and promoted as DDG/ORD, OFB HQ-Kolkata
He got a rousing farewell .It was very hard for people to say goodbye to G.Chatterjee – GM of major Ordnance Factories in Kanpur till 1986-87 FY ,they called him a ‘SAINT’ and said “Aisa koi GM Kabhi Nahi Huya Na Hoga ”- according to them he was ever best GM of OFB – Factories in Kanpur since its inception.
After retirement from OFB , (1987-88) he joined corporate “ Rajda Group of Companies” under foundry member Late Paresh Rajda (CMD) – as a full time consultant.After working in Kolkata HO , at Chatterjee International Building-Kolkata for their companies like Ezy slide Fasteners Pvt, Ltd, Vib Gyor Pvt Ltd , Halo District, Gujarat for some years then he was also given the charge of one of their sister concern Suri – Woven sack Industry – WB .While doing consultancy he also started to attend night college (D.N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital) to become a homeopathic doctor.
This was his long desired goal.
He always wanted becoming a doctor not to make money from patients but to help the needy especially the poor people who don’t have money , he also provides medicines from his own pocket for poor patients till date .
G.Chatterjee’s youth was filled with his seamless passion to educate himself along with working indomitably against different challenges.
