Srinagar: Panic gripped Kashmirs commercial hub, Lal Chowk, today when police launched an abrupt search-operation in the area.
Police, assisted by paramilitary CRPF troops, cordoned off the city centre area around 3.15pm and asked the civilians to make queues for frisking and I-Card checking, the eyewitnesses said.
Apart from creating a general mayhem, the operation also led to a massive traffic jam. This is for the first time after 2010 that police launched an operation in the area, which keeps bustling with the locals as well as the tourists.
Officials said the crackdown was launched on the instructions of the higher ups to step up vigil in view of the upcoming Amamrnath yatra which begins from June 24.
This is being done as a preventive and precautionary measure after the spurt in the recent attacks by militants, a senior police official said.
Meanwhile Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, A.G Mir said, Security forces have been put on alert. We want to prevent any untoward incident and that is why the area was cordoned off.
