Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaz Umar Farooq, on Friday was barred from offering Friday prayers by the authorities after he was put under house arrest. Hurriyat (M) spokesman, Shahid-ul-Islam, said that a large posse of policemen cordoned off Mirwaizs Nageen residence this morning and informed him that he couldnt move out. Mirwaiz was scheduled to lead a rally after Friday congregation prayers in observance of the foundation day of the Awami Action Committee.
Meanwhile authorities on Friday again put the senior separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani under house arrest to prevent any law and problem.
Chairman of the rival faction of Hurriyat, SAS Geelani, too was kept under a house arrest to prevent him from offering the Friday prayers in the mosque. Geelani was not allowed to offer Friday prayers for the seventeenth time this year and was kept under house detention at his Hyderpora residence, said Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akber.
The authorities continue to put restrictions on Geelanis social, political and religious activities by placing him under continuous house arrest, the spokesman said, adding, After Afzal Gurus hanging on February 9, Hurriyat (G) Chairman was placed under house-arrest in New Delhi. Later when he arrived in Srinagar, he was once again not allowed to move out of his house.
While strongly condemning governments decision to put Geelani under a perpetual house-arrest, the Hurriyat (G) spokesman said, Using such repressive measures to prevent Geelani from voicing his views and restricting his activities in these tense political circumstances, the government is making mockery of democracy and turning Jammu and Kashmir into a totalitarian State.
