Omar Abdullah Must Give Up ‘Obsession’ With AFSPA Removal: BJP

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janata Party today said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah must give up his “obsession” with the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
“Mr Abdullah must give up his obsession with the demand for partial revocation of AFSPA in view of the disclosures made by outgoing GoC 15 Corps Lt Gen Om Prakash that there are still 325 militants active in the state, out of which 60 per cent are foreign militants,” BJP National Executive Member Jitendra Singh said here.
Commenting on Intelligence inputs that even though security situation in the state had become stable, it continues to be ‘fragile’, Dr Singh said the reports about educated youth joining militant ranks is a matter of serious concern which has not only political but also far-reaching social and cultural ramifications.
He said the issue needed to be addressed in a more holistic manner rising above party lines.
“We contest the argument that AFSPA could be withdrawn from some of the districts,” he said while quoting the example of Samba from where the state government proposes withdrawal of AFSPA.
“This is one district which has been constantly witnessing infiltration attempts including recent digging of an underground tunnel,” added the BJP leader.
Union Home Ministry is deliberately sending out contradictory and confusing signals on the issue of AFSPA because while it is convinced by the security forces’ contention to continue with AFSPA, it does not at the same time wish to antagonise the Chief Minister and National Conference with which it is sharing a coalition in the state, said Dr Singh.
