SRINAGAR – A human rights watchdog on Tuesday released its annual report claiming six people were killed in police action in Kashmir since August 5, and as many as 662 people were slapped with controversial Public Safety Act (PSA) to foil any protests against the abrogation of special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The report titled ‘Annual 2019 Human Rights Review’ was released by prominent rights group Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) and Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) here today.
The report states that six people were killed in police action across Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A by the Modi-led government on August 5. Among the deaths, three people, including a woman died after inhaling either pepper or tear gas used to disperse protesters, the report says.
It also blames government forces for the drowning of a youth in Srinagar after being chased by the men in uniform.
The report also says that 80 civilians, 159 militants and 129 government forces personnel were killed this year.
According to data obtained by the JKCCS and APDP, as many as 662 fresh habeas corpus petitions (challenging detentions under PSA) were registered in 2019, out of which 412 were registered after 5 August.
