SRINAGAR – Over 1.5 lakh Kashmir based government employees are in distress due to late fee and fine imposed upon them by Income Tax Department after failing to file income tax returns due to ban on internet in Kashmir from August this year.
Reliable sources said that the Kashmir based government employees who are entitled for Income Tax Return are mulling to visit Jammu to pay their IT Returns. They are repeatedly appealing authorities to restore internet service in Valley.
“Due to internet gag, we are unable to file IT Returns online. The irony is that this gag is imposed by Government upon us and yet they are asking us pay late fee and impose a fine of Rs 5000,” said a Gazetted Officer Muhammad Sultan.
Another employee said that despite at the receiving end, the government employees are being forced to pay late fee and even a fine is exacted from them.
Pertinently, after the annulment of special status in Jammu and Kashmir, the life in Valley came to a grinding halt while authorities resorted to unprecedented communication blockade. The ban on internet service continues till date.
Authorities extended the date of filing to November 30. These employees appealed IT authorities to extend the date till internet is restored in Valley.
An IT official said that it is the Union Finance Ministry that takes any call in such matter. (KNT)
