SRINAGAR – Jammu Kashmir Police have taken cognizance after it surfaced that incarcerated Srinagar Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran has been able to contact his councilors through cell phone.
Sheikh Imran along with over two dozen political leaders has been put under arrest at MLA Hostel. These political leaders were arrested shortly after Government of India annulled the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The detainees include three former Chief Ministers including Dr Farooq Abdullh, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah.
Police Station Raj Bagh here in Srinagar city has taken cognizance after it came to fore that Srinagar Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran has been able to call some councilors from MLA Hostel and he has issued some instructions to them, official sources said.
They said that police is looking into the matter and trying to find out how the incarcerated Deputy Mayor is able to call as mobile jammers are installed in and around MLA Hostel.
“Police is also trying to find out where from Sheikh Imran has get the cell phone,” sources said.
A police official on condition of anonymity said that Sheikh Imran was shifted to hospital a couple of times and they are trying to find out whether somebody handed over any cell phone to him there or not.
“It is astonishing that all the calls he has made to some of the Srinagar Councilors have been made around MLA Hostel where jammers are installed. The investigation is going on and facts are being ascertained,” he said.
At Centaur Hotel, that was the first destination of incarcerated leaders, cell phones were allowed but as soon as they were shifted to MLA Hostel, jammers were installed and they were asked to handover their cell phones.
If sources are to be believed, Deputy Mayor Shiekh Imran while making calls to some of the councilors have told them not to go against the incumbent SMC Mayor and don’t support any move from BJP that is keen to install his own Mayor.
The police official said that they are least concerned about the political activity but their concern is how Deputy Mayor was able to access the cell phone. (KNT)
