Anantnag – Panic gripped the Lal Chowk bazaar of Anantnag, when suspected militants hurled a grenade at an army vehicle on Tuesday afternoon that wounded seven civilian and a policeman.
Police said the incident occurred at around 12.30 pm when an army vehicle was passing by the area. Police said grenade was hurled towards the army vehicle, however, it missed the target and exploded on the road.
Eyewitnesses said the grenade explosion created panic in the area and people were seen running for cover. Heavy contingent of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reached the spot and cordoned off the area and carried out search operation.
This was the second attack of the kind in the last 48 hours in Anantang district. Earlier, on Sunday evening, a grenade was hurdled at Sherbagh Police Station which exploded in the compound of Police station but no one was injured in this explosion.
PRO Defence, Naresh Vij, said, At around 12.30 noon, a vehicle of 1-sector RR was on its way when unidentified militants hurled grenade on the roof top of the vehicle which fell and exploded on the ground. Several civilian were injured besides a policeman. The explosion damaged the vehicle partly but none of the soldiers sustained any injury.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have solved the case of grenade attack on Police Post Sher Bagh and arrested four persons involved in the attack.
According to District police authorities, on 02-06-2013 a grenade was lobbed on Police Post Sher Bagh Anantnag. A case under FIR No. 160/2013 was registered at police station Anantnag and the investigation was started.
During the investigation police detained a suspect Irshad Ahamd Dar son of Ghulam Mohammad Dar resident of Sheerpora Anantnag. During questioning, he revealed that one Mukhtar Ahmad Dar son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar resident of Dangerpora Anantnag lobbed the grenade on Police Post Sher Bagh on the directions of Hizbul Mujahidin militant Mubarak Ahmad Wani alias Major Saqib and Fayaz Talak who is presently in Central Jail, the police spokesman said in a statement issued today.
He said the entire plan of the attack on Police Post Sherbagh was made at Talak Bakery in which two of their associates Muzaffer Ahmad Itoo son of Abdul Ahad Itoo resident of Muran Pulwama and Amir Syed Salathi son of Mohammad Syed resident of Iqbalabad K.P Road Anantnag were also present.
Anantnag police arrested Mukhtar Ahmad Dar, Muzaffer Ahmad Itoo and Amir Syed Salathi, thereby solving the case. However, two more members of this HM module are evading arrest. The efforts are on to apprehend them, the statement said.
