BARAMULLA – Indian and Pakistani troops on Wednesday exchanged gunfire in Uri sector of this north Kashmir district, official sources said.
They said people were busy in their daily routine work when Pak troops suddenly resorted to firing and shelling, targeting civilian areas and forward posts at the Line of Control (LoC) in Hajipeer sector in Uri at 0900 hrs. Pak troops violated 2003 ceasefire after silence for about one month.
People in about six border villages, including Churanda and Batkote in Hajipeer sector, immediately rushed for shelter, they said adding Indian troops also retaliated and the exchange continued for several hours.
There was no report of any loss of life or damage to property; they said adding damage suffered by Pak troops was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, local administration in Uri said that in case of more ceasefire violations, residents of border villages, who under the direct target of Pak troops fire, will be shifted to safer places. (UNI)
2 mortar shells defused in Kathua
The government forces on Wednesday defused two live mortar shells fired by Pakistan Rangers in a village along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district.
The Pakistan Rangers fired dozens of shells targeting Rathawa village in Hiranagar sector on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, villagers said.
The house of Ram Piyari, a resident of Rathawa village, was hit by three mortar shells, of which one exploded causing damage to the walls.
The other two shells did not explode and Pyari called the security forces for help.
Later, the two shells were safely defused by the forces averting a major tragedy, she said. (PTI)
