SRINAGAR – A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) has finally hit the region resulting in further chilly weather conditions in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, where isolated rain and snow could occur during the next 24 hours.
However, this will follow Widespread (WD) rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir and scattered rain or snow in Ladakh region during the subsequent 48 hours, a Met department spokesman said this afternoon.
He said mercury continued to remain below normal in the valley, where air traffic at Srinagar International Airport remained suspended for the past four days due to dense fog, badly hitting several thousand passengers who were scheduled to travel outside the Kashmir. However, situation may improve tomorrow.
As the WD, which has originated in Arabian sea has entered the region from Afghanistan and Pakistan. This system could result in isolated very light rain and snow in the valley, including Srinagar during the next 24 hours, he said.
However, during the subsequent two days—December 12 and 13—widespread rain and snow is predicted which could again affect surface traffic, particularly on Srinagar-Jammu, Srinagar-Leh and historic 86-km-long Mughal road.
Dense fog coupled with icy cold winds badly hit the normal life in the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, where the mercury remained below normal.
Met spokesman said the minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 2.4 degree which was 1,8 degree below normal while the maximum temperature on Monday was 4 degree, 6.2 degree below normal.
He said the sky would be generally cloudy to very light rain or snow during the next 24 hours and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 7 degree and minus one degree respectively.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded lowest minus 4 degree minimum temperature followed by Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, minus 3.3 degree, Kupwara minus 3.2 degree, Kokernag minus 2.8 degree and Qazigund minus 2.5 degree.
People in Ladakh region continued to shiver due to several degree below freezing point temperature.
Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia on Srinagar-Leh national highway, was again coldest at minus 19 degree minimum temperature while the maximum was minus 5 degree. Water bodies remained frozen in Drass, where people are being supplied water through tankers or they are using spring water which remained warm in winter and cold during summer.
At Leh, headquarters of UT Ladakh, the minimum temperature was minus 13.6 degree, he said. The sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 1 degree and minus 12 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Leh.
