KULGAM – Life in Kulgam Headquarter came to a grinding halt after combined forces launched a massive cordon and search operation on Monday.
Sources said during wee hours Government Forces led by Army laid a siege around whole Kulgam Headquarters and launched massive search operation.
Locals said that scores of areas falling within the jurisdiction district headquarters were brought under siege. These include Chawalgam, Ganaipora, Reshi Mohalla, Naikpora, Dangarpora, Labdipora, Astan Mohalla and others.
All the roads leading towards headquarters were sealed. The traffic on Kulgam-Qazigund, Kulgam-Anantnag, Kulgam-Damhal Hanjipora and Kulgam-Shopian roads wore a deserted look whole day as no vehicle was allowed to ply on these roads.
Local sources said that people in scores of villages were asked to assemble at one place and their identity cards were thoroughly searched. “It reminded me of 1990’s when houses were searched and men and children were asked to assemble at one place,” said a local Tariq Ahmed.
Official sources said that this massive cordon and search operation was launched after continuous inputs about the movement of militants in the villages adjacent to district headquarters.
Government employees alleged that they were not allowed to report on their duties. They said even children were prohibited to attend coaching institutes.
“It is a massive crackdown. All shops and business establishments are shut while roads are wearing a deserted look. There are men in uniform everywhere,” said another local.
The cordon and search operation was called off later in the day. An official said that it ended peacefully and no contact with any militant was established during the cordon and search operation. (KNT)
