SRINAGAR – Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar and world famous ski resort of Gulmarg , experienced light to moderate snowfall resulting in considerable drop in the mercury.
However, weather will improve and remain dry from Friday during the next six days, a Met department spokesman told UNI on Thursday afternoon.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 kms from here in north Kashmir district of Baramulla received fresh snowfall. The upper heights , including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, the highest skiing point connected by Cable Car, experienced several feet of fresh snowfall during the past 24 hours.
The upper reaches in entire north Kashmir also received moderate to heavy snowfall resulting in closure of dozens of roads leading to far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC). Keran and Karnah roads which reopened only on Tuesday were again closed due to fresh snowfall on Wednesday. The Machil and Gurez roads also remained closed due to snowfall.
The holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery received fresh snowfall during the past 24 hours. Reports of snowfall were also received from Sheshnag, Panjterni, Pisso top and Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on traditional yatra route.
About one foot of fresh snowfall was also experienced at Harpora and two to three feet between Dobjan and Pir-ki-Gali on historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir and Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region. The road is closed from November 6 due to snow.
Upper heights in the central Kashmir districts of Ganderbal and Badgam, including tourist resorts of Yusmarg and Dodpatheri also received fresh snowfall.
The Srinagar-Leh national highway remained closed for traffic due to fresh snowfall at Sonamarg, Zojila, Meenmarg and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia.
Srinagar and its adjoining areas had turned white this morning following fresh snowfall in the wee hours of Thursday after heavy rain during the day on Wednesday, when the maximum temperature dropped and settled at 6.1 degree, six notches below normal.
Roof and tree tops besides open fields had turned white in the city. However, as the day progress snow melted due to which roads were under water.
Met spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be 11 degree and 0 degree respectively which are above normal during the next 24 hours.
The local administration has pressed into service de-watering motors to drain out the rain water at several places in the city.
