SRINAGAR – The Supreme Court Monday adjourned hearing on a batch of petitions-including one of Kashmir-based Editor Anuradha Basin and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad–challenging Kashmir’s communication shut down till today (Tuesday) at the request of the Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta.
The Court had earlier rebuked Mehta for ”not giving enough attention’’ to the case at hand and even asked the Jammu & Kashmir administration, to respond to all the contentions raised by the petitioners on the restrictions imposed following the abrogation of Article 370.
The bench presided by NV Ramana and comprising Justices R Subhash Reddy and BR Gavai told Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the state administration, that the several petitioners who had challenged the many restrictions put up by the government in the region, have already argued their case in detail. So he also needs to be equally prepared to come up with a detailed response to contest the claims of petitioners.
The bench coming down harshly on Mehta said you have to answer each and every question raised by the petitioners who had argued their case in detail.
“Your counter-affidavit does not help us to come to any conclusion. Don’t give the impression that you are not giving enough attention to the case,” said the bench. Mehta said most of the averments made by the petitioners on restrictions are “incorrect” and he will respond to each and every aspect when he argues in court. (KNT)
