PULWAMA – Overnight Pulwama encounter ended on Tuesday morning with the killing of two local militants. A gunfight between militants and Government Forces erupted at Pachhar Drabgam village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday night when joint forces of Army and CRPF stopped a Tata Mobile. The militants present in the vehicle opened fire, ensuing a gun battle.
In the initial exchange of fire a militant was killed while reinforcement was called in to track down another militant.
Official said that light system was installed in the area to stop militants from escaping from the spot. They added that contact with hiding militant was established during the middle of the night and intermittent exchange of fire continued till Tuesday dawn. The gunfight ended with the killing of another militant.
A police official identified the slain militants as Irfan Ahmed Rather, a resident of Litar Rajpora and Irfan Ahmed Sheikh of Naira Pulwama.
Irfan Ahmed Sheikh alias Muzamil was the district commander of Hizbul Mujhadeen who had joined the militant ranks in 2016. He according to police sources was a close aide of senior militant commander Reyaz Naikoo. Another militant Reyaz Ahmed Rather was a post graduate student who had joined Hizb in November 2017.
The killing of militants sparked clashes and shutdown in the district. Sources said that youth pelted stones on vehicles and the building of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Kakapora while in other parts of the district, all the shops and business establishments remained shut.
The native village Naira of slain militant also witnessed clashes where Forces used tear-smoke shells to disperse protesters.
Reports said that thousands of people participated in separate funeral processions of these militants. They were buried amid pro-Kashmir and pro-freedom slogans.
