NEW DELHI: Pune Warriors’ off-spinner Parvez Rasool has gone the Amla-way. The first, and the only cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to play in the IPL has, like the devout South African, refused to endorse a liquor brand on his team clothing, owing to religious sentiments.
Parvez has, reportedly, removed the logo of the liquor brand- one of the leagues sponsors- from his team jersey, as it hurts his religious sentiments.
The 24-year old said he didnt initially realize that the logo belonged to an alcohol company, but took evasive action on coming to know of it.
I used tape to hide the logo and people were initially wondering why I was doing this. I told them that it is because my religion prohibits alcohol consumption. I can’t endorse liquor brand. For me, my belief is paramount. My family is happy with the decision, he said.
Parvezs refusal to endorse an alcohol brand follows the instance of Proteas batsman Hashim Amla, who had famously refused to endorse a beer brand- also team’s official sponsor- on religious grounds. Amla had refused to play till the logo was not removed from his team jersey. Agencies
