SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday claimed that octogenarian Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani was a threat to peace and his freedom has been curtailed to prevent situation from taking an ugly turn.
His speeches trigger law and order problem that is why his freedom has been curtailed, Omar told reporters on the opening day of Durbar offices here.
When asked why his government is so afraid of Syed Ali Geelani and even did not allow him to conduct seminars, Omar Abdullah said that he was not scared of him.
We are not afraid of him. By and large, he is free to do whatever he likes. Unfortunately, there is a pattern to his public speeches and appearances, particularly when he chooses to use the stage of post Friday prayers to incite people. Every time, I have intervened with the state police authorities and relaxed the restrictions on him so that he can travel. Every time he leaves the area, there is a serious incident of stone pelting which follows his address to the crowd and his incitement of people and therefore there is nothing peaceful in what he does or the results of his speeches, Abdullah said.
I would be the first person to intervene again if there was an assurance from his side that his appearances will not be followed by the law and order disturbances, he said.
Please understand if dealing with those law and order disturbances, God forbid there will be an injury or causality, none of you people who are pleading his case publicly like this will hold him responsible. You will hold me, my police and my government responsible, whereas the fault will not be ours as we will be dealing with the situation created by somebody else, Abdullah said adding If you are so keen that he continued his public activities and if you can assure me that his public activities will not be followed by law and order disturbances, I will have no hesitation in advising the police to remove his restrictions, he said.
