SRINAGAR: Students of Media Education Research Centre (MERC) University of Kashmir on Monday organized a street theatre Speak-up to highlight the issue of ragging at different venues at the KU campus.
The street theater was performed by the third semester students of MERC at several vantage spots during the course of the day in the University campus that include Sir Syed gate, Rumi gate, Iqbal Library, Humanities block, Business school, Science and the Administrative block.
According to the organizers of the street theater the aim of the event was to awaken the students of the varsity about the social menace- ragging and its implications on the psyche of the new entrants in any higher educational institution.
The main aim of organising this theatre was to encourage students to stop ragging and speak against it. Ragging is a menace and it needs to be abolished from all the educational institutions, said Heeba Din of third semester MERC who directed the street theater under the guidance of the Coordinator of the department Faruk Masoodi.
She said Though there are laws that ban ragging but we wanted to create awareness amongst the students about those laws and their implications.
The anti-ragging act was performed by the ardent students of MERC at seven different places across the varsity campus which was witnessed by scores of students and faculty members from different departments who appreciated the novel initiative of the students of MERC.
The performers said that they want to awaken the society about different social issues and their department was going to organise more street theatres in future.
It was our first attempt and we have successfully performed it at all the seven venues. Our department is all set to organise more street theatres in future on different social issues, both in the campus and outside, a performer, Nishah Zargar said.
This event was first of its kind in the Kashmir University and was organized to draw the attention of students and administration towards this issue. The event was timed to coincide with the start of the new academic session which is currently underway in Kashmir University for all the regular courses.
It is pertinent to mention that ragging is banned as per the UGC guidelines and UGC has defined ragging as any conduct, whether using words spoken or written, or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student and generate a sense of shame or embarrassment, adversely affecting the physique or psyche of the student.
