SRINAGAR: The chairman of the JKLF, Muhammad Yasin Malik, was detained along with over a score of his associates near the northern township of Sopore on Friday, his party said.
Malik and other leaders were held at Mirgund while heading to lead a protest rally in the town, and later taken to the local police station in custody, it said.
Soon after being held up, the JKLF men sat on a dharna on the highway, blocking traffic for nearly an hour, according to reports.
The police had erected heavy barricades on the route and turned the highway into a war zone to stop the JKLF leaders, the JKLF said.
CRPF and RR men had been deployed at a number of places, and all passing vehicles were being stopped, and occupants searched and questioned, it said.
The JKLF motorcade defied an RR blockade near Narbal, but was besieged by a heavy deployment of CRPF and RR personnel at Mirgund, it said.
