SRINAGAR Three militants were killed in two separate gunfights with government forces in Shopian and Sopore on Tuesday, officials said.
They said that a joint team of armys 1 RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege at Awneera village of Shopian in south Kashmir during midnight.
A police officer said that the encounter broke out soon after the joint team fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot.
During the course of gunfight, he said, both the holed up militants were killed and their bodies were recovered along with arms and ammunition and other incriminating materials, he said.
He identified the slain as Sayar Ahmad Bhat of Yaripora Kulgam and Shakir Ahmad Wagay of Awneera Shopian.
As per police records both the slain were inspired by IS ideology. They were wanted by law for their complicity in militant crimes including attack on security establish, he said, adding, According to the police records, they were part of groups involved in planning and executing attacks in the area and many other civilian atrocities. Shakir Wagay according to police records was involved in Case FIR No 25/2019 pertaining to the killing of civilian Irfan Hameed Sheikh of Zainapora. Militant crime cases were registered against both of them.
After conducting the medico formalities, the bodies of the slain were handed over to their legal heirs for last rites, reports and officials said.
Meanwhile, thousands of people attended the funeral prayers at their respective native villages. The militants were later laid to rest amid pro-freedom slogans. In wake of the encounter, authorities have snapped mobile internet service in the southern district.
Militant Killed In Sopore
A militant was killed in a gunfight with government forces started in Wadoora Payeen village of Sopore in North Kashmirs Baramulla district on Tuesday evening.
Official sources said that contingents of Army 22 RR, SOG Sopore, 177, 179 and 92 CRPF Batallion Baramulla and Police cordon off Wadoora Payeen village on wee hours today.
As the forces intensified the searches, militants hiding in the area opened fire, leading to a gunfight in which one militant was killed so far. An army officer confirmed the killing of militant and said that his body has been retrieved. searches are going on he said.
Meanwhile, In view of the prevailing situation and as a precautionary measure all the government and private Educational institutions, in Subdivision Sopore shall suspend their class work on 12th of June 2019, ADC Sopore said.
