Despite being under constant scrutiny from the state, most Kashmiris never seem to lose their inate moral humaness which has been a part of our socio-cultural tradition for ages. It is often termed as Kahmiriyat. Ones belongingness with the Kashmiri culture and various religious beliefs has always kept the moral standards of Kashmiris high to exhibit good human values, particularly towards women. Materialistic belongings are deemed worthless as honesty drives people to live respectable lives without shame.
Several surveys regard Kashmir as the safest place for tourists. According to survey reports conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Indian tourism, Jammu and Kashmir has hardly witnessed any crimes against foreign or domestic tourists.
However, a few weeks back, incidents of rapes against minors shook our collective conscience. People took to streets to protest these heinous acts. Such incidents make you wonder about our famed hospitality and this inability to protect our own people needs to stop.
It can be broken down as a consequece of increased drug abuse amongst the younger generation, lack of proper parental care or a lack of sexual education in our society. Kashmiri culture is being consumed by the evils of modern society. Impressionable youngsters are taking traditional values for granted and are falling into a cycle of violence. Our image is taking a hit as a result and the concept Kashmiriyat seems to be lost when it comes to our own people.
It is time for our socity to embrace changes regarding the upbringing of our future generations and create a safer space for the women in our society.
