One person was killed and four others injured, one of them seriously, when a section of the Thajwas Glacier in Sonarmarg sheared off and crashed into sightseers on Tuesday.
The tragedy occurred this afternoon when a large number of tourists had gathered near the glacier, many enjoying sledge-rides on the hard-packed ice.
Local police and civilian administration rushed the injured tourists to the primary health centre, where doctors declared Dr. Zubair Ahmad Chaudhary as brought dead.
Another victim, Shaukat Ahmad Rathar of Bagh-e-Mahtab in Srinagar, was admitted for treatment.
Three others with minor injuries were discharged after first aid.
They have been identified as Muhammad Irshad and Sheikh Suhail, both from Kolkata, and Ramesh Kumar of Uttar Pradesh.
Dr. Chaudhary and Rathar were friends, and had come to Sonamarg on a picnic.
Having obtained his medical degree recently, Dr. Chaudhary, 21, was working at the SKIMS. Observer News Service
