SRINAGAR: Normal life was severely affected due a call for strike by Joint Resistance Leadership against the civilian killings during the month of Ramazan.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had called for the shutdown alleging loss of innocent Kashmiri lives at the hand of security agencies.
Authorities ordered the closure of schools and colleges to prevent any untoward incidents. Post graduate entrance test scheduled for the day was also postponed by the University of Kashmir.
The authorities also imposed restrictions in parts of Valley including Old City areas and prayers at historic Jamia Masjid were disallowed on the second Friday of the holy month of the Ramazan.
Five militants, two civilians and two army soldiers were killed in two separate gunfights which broke out between militants and government forces at Dalipora Pulwama and Hendew Shopian yesterday.
Reports said shops and other business establishments were closed in Srinagar including the commercial hub of Lal Chowk. Schools and colleges were closed in this summer capital on the orders of the deputy commissioner.
The authorities also imposed restrictions in the parts of Old Srinagar including areas in and around historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar.
Hurriyat Conference (M) also strongly denounced the imposition of stringent curbs in downtown areas and barring people from offering Friday prayers by sealing the historic Jamia Masjid on the eve of the commencement of Ashra-e-Magfirat of sacred month and termed it as blatant interference in religious affairs.
The Hurriyat Conference said grand mosque being the spiritual center, people from all over Kashmir would reach the Jamia Masjid early on Friday morning particularly during Ramazan, recite Quran and later participate in the congregational Friday prayers to seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah.
However, unfortunately, the present state administration sealed it even on the sacred occasion of second Friday of holy month and it deserves all forms of condemnation,
Reports said all shops and business establishments were also closed in Shopian and Pulwama while public transport was completely off the roads. The education institutions were also closed on the orders district of authorities to prevent student protests. Authorities also snapped internet again early morning in Shopian as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of Ishtiyaq Ahmad Bhat son of Dawood Ahmad Bhat at Hendew Imamsahab Shopian, and two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants Shakeel Ahmad Dar son of Abdul Gani Dar at Tukroo Shopian and Yawar Mushtaq son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar at Bandpoh Thokerpora Shopian.
