SRINAGAR Protests erupted in Laser village of Baramulla districts Rafiabad area on Saturday over the Army allegedly thrashing two youth for not voting during the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
People took to the streets in the afternoon and staged a protest alleging that the Army had thrashed two youth, Bilal Ahmad Rather and Tariq Ahmad Rather, after stopping their vehicle and checking their fingers for voting ink.
The army questioned the youth on why they had not cast votes and beat them up, they alleged. Both the youth were admitted to a hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered due to the beating.
The protestors blocked the Baramulla-Kupwara road.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore Javid Iqbal told a local news agency that Army men stopped their car but two youth responded aggressively following which Army thrashed them. However, he said that they have started investigation in this regard. (With inputs from KNO)
