SRINAGAR Students of New Womens College Srinagar Wednesday held a protest here against an official directive asking them to shift to other colleges in the city.
Scores of students enrolled in the college assembled at Press Enclave here and staged a protest against the authorities for asking them to shift to Amar Singh College and Government Degree College Nawakadal.
The protesting students said it was beyond their comprehension that the authorities would ask them to shift to other colleges at this juncture.
We are being asked to shift to other colleges as the education department plans to make the newly- established New Women’s College functional at Zakura. Till now, the college was functioning from a make shift library block of the Amar Singh College, a protesting student said.
Principal Maheen Mustafa said the college was only following directions from the department to shift these students to Nawa Kadal College and Amar Singh College because most of the students enrolled in the college are from Budgam district.
And Zakura doesnt fall in catchment area for these students, a media report quoted her as saying.
80 percent students enrolled in the college are from Chadura area of Budgam district, she said.
She said it wont be possible for students of Budgam district to cover a journey of 40 kilometres on daily basis to reach their college in Zakura. For them, the government has given us options of Amar Singh College and Nawa Kadal College, she said.
The decision to make the college functional at Zakura was taken after a review meeting convened recently by secretary higher education department concluded that infrastructure and other necessary facilities had been completed at the college.
It was also decided that students who are presently enrolled in the college shall be adjusted in the nearby colleges-Amar Singh College or Women’s College Nawakadal Srinagar as per their convenience.
