SRINAGAR Bodies of two hunters were recovered by a rescue team of armys 18 Rashtriya Rifles on Thursday, a day after they were swept away by a snow avalanche in Lolab forests of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Official sources said that bodies of Bashir Ahmad Hajam son of Mohd Younis and Mamdin Hajam son Najamdin of Ring Warnow were recovered by the rescue team, equipped with latest tools.
“Three persons left home yesterday morning towards Rang Warnow forest area. Two of them came under a snow avalanche while third one returned in injured conditions,” said Colonel Harish Yadav of 18 RR while briefing media.
Soon after receiving the information, he said, armys team along with police met the family members and also the injured and got the details about the sequence of events and how the duo came under the avalanche, he said. “Amid inclement weather, our teams equipped with latest and specialized avalanche tools besides a dog along with police and SDRF teams started a joint rescue operation today early in the morning at the first light”, he said.
At around 12:30 p.m., the joint rescue teams reached the site of the incident where around four feet of snow has accumulated in the area, he said.
Despite harsh weather conditions, he said, the rescue teams managed to retrieve the bodies of the duo, he said. The bodies were later handed over to respective families for last rites.
